Overview of composite repair technology

At present, the total length of oil and gas pipelines in the world exceeds 1.7 106km, and a considerable part of them have been in service for more than 30 years, with a large number of external corrosion and other defects, resulting in an annual cost of $6 billion to $8 billion for pipeline repair [1]. In general, severe external corrosion can be repaired directly by changing pipe or sleeve, and the repair cost is expensive.

In recent years, composite material repair technology as a new type of pipe defects repair technology has many advantages. Composite pipe body defect repair technology is the use of coating for high strength of defective parts of the packing, as well as on the tube body and super glue between fiber layer, the role of stress in the pipeline defect site evenly, is passed on to the repair of composites layer composite material with defect pipe together, deformation, reasonable distribution of defect pipe stress, thereby reinforcing purposes.

Compared with traditional metal material repair methods, composite material repair technology has obvious advantages:

1) high specific strength and modulus of composite materials;

2) strong designability of composite materials;

3) there are a variety of molding processes for composite materials, which facilitate the reinforcement of large areas or complex structures;

4) the repair process requires no shutdown, short repair time, low cost and simple equipment required for on-site repair.

These advantages of composite materials basically meet the technical requirements of long distance oil and gas pipelines for pipe body repair materials and have become a development trend of pipe body defect repair technology. The composites commonly used to repair pipe defects include glass fiber composite (GRP) or carbon fiber composite (CFRP), etc. The resins commonly used include polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy resin. In the field of composite repair technology, ClockSpring's composite repair sleeve in the United States is the most representative one, and is widely used in onshore and offshore oil and gas pipelines in North America, Europe and other countries. In recent years, some Asian countries have also started to apply it.
